Old Problem, New Challenges: Age Discrimination

Abstract

The article examines the issue of age discrimination within the Slovak legal, social, and institutional framework. It analyses the scope of legal protection, identifies legislative gaps, exceptions, and shortcomings in the enforcement of anti-discrimination standards. Particular attention is paid to the practical functioning of relevant institutions, especially the Labour Inspectorate and the Slovak National Centre for Human Rights, as well as the barriers that hinder the effective application of the right to equal treatment. The article highlights the specific nature of age discrimination, which may affect every individual at different stages of life—in employment, pensions, husin, or education. The author proposes legislative and non-legislative measures aimed at strengthening protection against age discrimination and fostering an inclusive environment for all age groups.
